We participated in the Winter Bird Count for The Cornell Labs of Ornithology, and Me, my parents, my sister, and my Grandfather Fred were assigned the Lake Goodwin area. There weren't very many birds, a Red-Bellied Sapsucker and a very handsome Mallard Drake were the stars of the show.
It was about an hour drive from Arlington to Samish Island, WA State. We met Ornithologist Libby Mills at the entrance to the island, and immediately we were surrounded by birds everywhere. The main attractions were two Merlins and one American Kestrel who were chasing a Bald Eagle.
